Woodstock, New York - Far-right political commentator Tucker Carlson on Friday defended Democrat Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed after the left-wing candida faced backlash for criticizing the President George W. Bush's War on Terror.
In a newsletter, Carlson shared his thoughts after El-Sayed's Republican challenger Mike Rogers called his opponent "disgusting."
"Hold on a second. Disgusting? Understanding that the [George W. Bush] administration was wrong to kill hundreds of thousands of people and waste trillions of dollars in Iraq, even though, again, Iraq did not do 9/11, is disgusting?" Carlson wrote.
"El-Sayed did not celebrate airplane hijackings or cheer lead Al-Qaeda; he simply said that the US conducting terrorism of its own in response to 9/11 was not exactly an appropriate reaction. He is obviously right."
Carlson further described El-Sayed as "literally Trumpian" in his appeal, and urged Michiganders to keep Rogers, a tool of Israel, "far away from Washington."
Tucker Carlson turns against MAGA
The remarks come as El-Sayed – who will face Rogers in November after winning the Democratic primary last month – has been facing criticism over statements he made criticizing the War on Terror. Critics on the right have said his comments were un-American and influenced by his Muslim faith.
Carlson was once a fierce MAGA defender of Donald Trump, but has since become one of the politician's biggest critics, most notably opposing Trump's continued support for Israel and his decision to abruptly go to war with Iran.
While some news outlets have claimed Carlson endorsed El-Sayed, that doesn't seem to be the case, as his comments focused more on his disdain for Rogers, who he has said he "wouldn't vote for at gunpoint."
