General Hospital star Sonya Eddy dies after surgery complications
Los Angeles, California - Actor Sonya Eddy, best known for her role on General Hospital, has died.
On Tuesday, Academy-Award winner Octavia Spencer announced on Instagram the shocking passing of her friend at the age of 55.
"My friend @sonyaeddy passed away last night. The world lost another creative angel. Her legions of @generalhospitalabc fans will miss her. My thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones, friends, and fans!" she captioned the post, which featured Eddy's headshot.
Shortly afterwards, TMZ confirmed that Eddy had passed away after sustaining an infection following a non-emergent surgery she had on December 9.
The veteran actor and California native began playing her most prominent role as Nurse Epiphany Johnson on the long-running soap opera in 2006.

In addition to Spencer, several of Eddy's General Hospital colleagues paid tribute to the late star.
General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini released a statement to PEOPLE, saying, "I am heartbroken about the loss of the incredible Sonya Eddy. I truly loved her not only as an actress, but as a friend."
He added, "The lights in the hub of the nurse's station will now be a little dimmer, but her spirit and light will live on in both the show and our set. On behalf of the entire GH cast and crew, we send our deepest sympathy to her family, friends, and fans. She will be very missed."
Actor Steve Burton, who plays Jason Morgan on the show, said he was at a "loss for words" over the death of his late costar.
"Sonya, (I hate using was) is an incredible LIGHT. She touched so many with her talent and just who she is. She will be missed," he wrote in a lengthy post on IG.
Eddy also made appearances on TV shows The Middle, 2 Broke Girls, Baby Daddy, and in films like Patch Adams, Seven Pounds, and Coach Carter.
