In a news release shared on Monday, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty announced the launch of the Transparency and Accountability Project, which is intended to "collect and assess evidence submitted by the public of potentially unlawful behavior by federal agents."

The office has created an online portal where citizens can submit photos and videos as evidence of federal officers using excessive force and chemical irritants as they seek possible charges.

Moriarty said the office is currently looking into 17 incidents, including one on January 21 involving Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino.

"We will investigate and pursue charging where appropriate, and we'll seek collaboration with local law enforcement wherever and whenever needed," Moriarty said.

"Make no mistake, we are not afraid of any legal fight. But we will do this ethically, responsibly, and vigorously," she added.

President Donald Trump launched Operation Metro Surge in December, sending thousands of federal immigration troops to Minnesota to carry out deportation sweeps.

Their presence was met with massive protests, leading to clashes with citizens and agents. Tensions grew even higher after two US citizens were fatally shot by agents during separate incidents in January.

After facing widespread backlash over his aggressive leadership and unapologetic responses to the shootings, Bovino was ultimately removed from his post.
