As confirmed by the Chula Vista Police Department, Max Mendoza died after a 15-year-old friend – whose name is not being released – had brought the firearm to one of their sleepovers on June 3.

Mendoza gained access to the gun at around 9 AM and accidentally shot himself with it.

According to the LA Times, his family quickly got him outside the condo complex on Telegraph Canyon Road and paramedics then attempted life-saving measures before rushing him to the hospital.

Unfortunately, there was nothing that could be done to save the boy, and he died shortly after.

His mother, Aida Mendoza, recalled the moment she held her "baby boy" as he repeatedly said, "Mom." She barely had time to tell her son she loved him for the last time.

The teen who took the gun to the sleepover has already been identified and questioned by police. Investigations are underway into how he got his hands on the weapon in the first place, as well as whom it is registered to.

Max is survived by his mother and four sisters.

"Even though he was only 12, you would talk to him and you would feel like you were talking to someone your age," his sister Macy Mendoza told Fox 5 San Diego. "He was so mature for his age. He was so wise beyond his years."

Max was described as a "truly special guy" on a GoFundMe page set up to help his family with funeral costs.
