Officers were responding to reports of a potentially armed man when they arrived at Austin-East Magnet High School, and they were met by gunshots in their direction.

One officer was shot in the confrontation and taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for surgery on non-life threatening injuries.

The shooter, who was identified as a student at the school, died at the scene. He was reportedly hiding in a restroom and began firing when asked by police to come out.

A statement from the Knoxville Police Department said there were no other known injuries or fatalities.

Uninvolved students were removed from the building and sent to the "reunification site" at a nearby baseball field while the building and its parameters were secured, police said in a tweet.

Shortly after, Bob Thomas, the superintendent for Knox County Schools, sent a tweet confirming the building was secure, and that all students had been released to their families.

The shooting comes days after Governor Bill Lee, signed an "open carry" bill into law, allowing people to legally carry a gun in the state without a permit.

Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon shared her gratitude for the involved officer's service, telling CBS News, "I thanked him for putting his life on the line to protect the students and staff at the school".

In the wake of the shooting, the school district announced that Austin-East Magnet High School will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

Per protocol for officer-involved shootings in the state, The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation will be taking the lead on the investigation.
