Washington DC - Prior to the US-Israeli attacks on Iran, Vice President JD Vance reportedly urged President Donald Trump and other key administration officials to "go big and go fast" if they chose to go ahead with a war.
A report by the New York Times on Trump's journey to launching a war on Iran detailed Vance's involvement in the process and his engagements with various officials.
The vice president has long been skeptical of US involvement in foreign wars, having become especially embittered by former President George W. Bush's regime change wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that lasted the best part of two decades.
Sources told the NYT that while Vance personally leaned against launching attacks on Iran in the days before Saturday's assault, he told high-ranking officials that if they were to go ahead, they should "go big and go fast."
CBS has independently verified Vance's comments, but a spokesperson for the Vice President's office declined to comment on the report.
According to an investigation by the Atlantic, in the lead-up to Saturday's attacks, Vance was joined by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine and senior Pentagon official Elbridge Colby in expressing opposition to the proposed operation.
Vance even met with Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi on Friday in a last-ditch effort to avoid an all-out war with Iran.
The former Ohio Senator initially kept a relatively low profile after Saturday's attack, but took to Fox News on Monday to applaud the war effort.
"The president wants to make it clear to the Iranians and to the world that he is not going to rest until he accomplishes that all-important objective of ensuring that Iran can't have a nuclear weapon," Vance said.
