The Satanic Temple (TST), based in Massachusetts, is arguing that Texas' new fetal heartbeat law violates its members' religious freedom, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Lawyers filed a letter with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requesting that they be able to access abortion pills in accordance with their faith-based rights.

"The Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) was instigated and enacts to assure Native Americans could have unfettered access to peyote for their religious rituals. Consistent with this purpose, TST wants to unfettered access to abortifacients for its religious use," the letter reads.

"Given that peyote is a Schedule I drug with no accepted medical use, TST's request for access to prescription drugs is even more reasonable to be granted under Federal Law."

In seeming contradiction with their name, The Satanic Temple does not actually worship the devil. Instead, they seek to "encourage benevolence and empathy, reject tyrannical authority, advocate practical common sense, oppose injustice and undertake noble pursuits," according to their website.

One of their seven basic tenets states, "One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone."

"The Satanic abortion ritual provides spiritual comfort and affirms bodily autonomy, self-worth, and freedom from coercive forces with the affirmation of TST's Seven Tenets," they further explain.

"The ritual is not intended to convince a person to have an abortion. Instead, it sanctifies the abortion process by instilling confidence and protecting bodily rights when undergoing the safe and scientific procedure."

Currently boasting around 300,000 adherents, it's possible The Satanic Temple could see a sharp rise in membership if their request is granted.
