NFL: Steelers stand tall at the end to beat back Baltimore’s last-ditch effort

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - The Pittsburgh Steelers managed to stay alive in the race for a playoff spot by sneaking out a gutsy win at home over their hated rivals, the Baltimore Ravens.

The Steelers overcame the Ravens 20-19 in one of the NFL’s marquee matchups of Week 13, keeping Pittsburgh’s hopes for postseason football alive with a sweet win over their nemesis.

It was what you’d expect from these two teams, a gritty, low-scoring battle ultimately won thanks to some late-game heroics.

This one was no different as both sides got off to a sluggish start with no score after the first quarter.

Then there was finally some offense by both the Ravens and the Steelers, with Baltimore taking a small 7-3 lead into halftime.

Not much changed in the third as the Ravens could only muster a field goal, and they still led 10-3 as the clocked ticked down.

But the Steelers finally scored a touchdown to open the fourth, and though another Baltimore field goal followed, Pittsburgh managed to grab the lead with under two minutes to play.

There were 12 seconds left when the Ravens found the end zone to pull within one point, but they were denied on the two-point conversion attempt, handing Pittsburgh the win.

Though he's struggled all through the 2021 regular season, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (39) showed real steel in this matchup against the familiar foes from Baltimore.

Roethlisberger is 10th in the league in completions with 269, and only 15th in touchdowns with 16 total.

Sunday was different. He was able to hang tough, especially in the fourth quarter, with two scores that would eventually give Pittsburgh the lead late in the game.

Roethlisberger finished the night with 21-for-31 passing, 236 yards, and two touchdowns.

Despite their unimpressive record, the Steelers can’t be counted out just yet.

They fought hard on Sunday to get a much-needed win and banded together right in the nick of time to get it done.

Pittsburgh scored 17 of their 20 points in the fourth quarter, finally getting their offense going after their defense did a great job in containing Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, one of the league’s most explosive and elusive players.

It wasn’t the prettiest win, but the Steelers showed that when their backs are against the wall, they can respond.

On Thursday, the Steelers (6-5-1) travel to Minnesota to face the Vikings (5-7) while next Sunday, the Ravens (8-4) will stay on the road to take on the Browns (6-6).
