The Avalanche thought they had them, but the Golden Knights didn’t give up with a late-game rush for a comeback win to take game three 3-2 in their Western Division second-round playoff series.

Colorado had a real chance to go up three games to none, but they couldn’t hang with the Knights as Vegas scored two quick goals within 45 seconds in the third period to win the game. The series shifted to Las Vegas for game three and the Golden Knights needed this game, otherwise, they might’ve had to start thinking about vacation plans a little earlier than expected.

The Avs were clearly banking on having enough momentum to take control on Vegas’ ice, but the Knights had other ideas.

The first period was hard-fought, with neither team really threatening, then both teams traded goals in the second period to know things up 1-1. After a Vegas penalty, the Avs scored a power-play goal to take the lead early in the third period. Colorado held the lead as long as they could until Jonathan Marchessault (30) and Max Pacioretty scored goals one after the other to take the lead back.

The win was just what the Knights needed, especially since they were playing in front of a sold-out crowd for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic hit.

The Knights hope to even things up in game four with a revised approach

Vegas figured out how to hang tough with the Avs in game three by shooting often and early, outshooting Colorado in the first period 15-3 and taking off from there. The Knights also defended their blue line better than they had in the first two games, to keep the Avs from flying in their zone, creating offensive chances. Vegas will have to continue with these trends in the next game to have a chance at tying the series at 2-2.

Game four is on Sunday night, once again from Las Vegas.
