Production has started on the multipart documentary, which was initially announced by ESPN in 2020 as part of Kaepernick's first-look deal with the Walt Disney Company.

Kapernick shouted out Lee for signing onto the project in an Instagram post on Thursday, adding, "It’s time for the narrative to be corrected."

The film will be the first time Kaepernick has given a first-person account of events regarding his journey to the NFL that subsequently created a path into civil rights activism.

According to a press release from ESPN, Kaepernick, "Is collaborating closely with Lee, who plans to use extensive new interviews and a vast never-before-seen archive to help Kaepernick tell his story from his perspective."

The 34-year-old football player-turned-activist rose to prominence as a six-year quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, leading the team to a Super Bowl appearance in 2013.

During the 2016 NFL season, Kaepernick began to kneel during the national anthem as a way to protest police brutality and social injustice in the US.

Following the 2016 season and a plethora of backlash, the quarterback decided to opt-out of his contract, and became a free agent. He hasn't been signed to a team since leaving the 49ers.

In 2017, the Wisconsin native filed a grievance with the NFL under the collective bargaining agreement, alleging the league was colluding against signing him to a team.

Two years later, the NFL and Kaepernick reached an agreement to settle the grievance complaint, according to ESPN.

The multipart ESPN documentary, set to be produced by ESPN Films, does not yet have a release date.
