Dog shelter worker spends hours comforting frightened abandoned puppy
Kennewick, Washington - Waffles the puppy dog was left at the Benton-Franklin Humane Society in Kennewick, Washington. What the only 5-month-old golden retriever did there later was like a stab in the heart for many.
Previously, his owner had been extremely cold and short-tempered.
"[H]e just sounded so casual about it," said shelter worker Julie Saraceno in an interview with The Dodo.
"He was just like, 'I have a dog I need to get rid of.'"
The man did not explain where exactly he got the puppy or why he no longer wanted it.
"I got the impression that it was just a nuisance to him and he just didn’t want the dog," Saraceno told the animal site.
Incidentally, she gave the puppy the name Waffles herself, as his owner had simply not given him one.
What the young golden retriever did shortly afterwards at the animal shelter was captured by his carer in a video that has reached three million clicks since the beginning of the week.
The reason: in the touching clip, the poor, insecure animal is shaking like a leaf in his new kennel.
"The shelter is very loud, so I think it’s very scary for a new dog when they’re here," says Saraceno.
"After about 30 minutes … he was like, 'OK, it’s not so bad.'"
In more than 1,500 comments, many users have since expressed their sadness, but some of them also have a specific question.

They want to know if Waffles is still available!
But the answer to this question has been "no" whenever it is asked in the comment section!
All that had to be done at the Benton-Franklin Humane Society was to neuter the male dog before he got snatched up.
Shortly afterwards, Waffles was gone again – to his forever home.
"There are probably at least 10 other puppies at the shelter right now," Saraceno added.
"So hopefully Waffles will make them come and see those other puppies that are there, too!"
