Con artist Anna Sorokin gets grilled and says she deserves a second chance

New York, New York - Con artist Anna Sorokin, who defrauded banks and friends of hundreds of thousands of dollars and gained fame after her story was dramatized on Netflix, has spoken out in a new interview, saying "I think I deserve a second chance."

The 31-year-old was jailed for three years for fraud and for cheating companies, banks, and friends out of more than $200,000 to finance her extravagant lifestyle.

The fake German heiress gained widespread notoriety through Netflix's series on her, Inventing Anna, for which Netflix paid her $300,000 for the rights to her story, according to reports.

Sorokin served time in prison between 2019 and 2021, but after her release, was promptly detained again by US immigration authorities in March 2021 because her visa had expired.

On Friday, the fraudster was released on bail after and placed under house arrest while she fights her deportation. She is only allowed to leave her apartment when she wants to see her lawyer or has a court date.

In a new interview with CNN aired on Wednesday, Sorokin was as self-assured and confident as ever as interviewer Jake Tapper grilled her and said she doesn't sound like she's "all that repentant," regretful, or that she feels like she's done anything wrong.

In the sit-down, Sorokin told Tapper she wants to stay in the US to make up for her self-proclaimed "wrong choices."

"I feel like I deserve a second chance. It was my mistake that I made and I served my time and I feel like I should deserve a second opportunity," she said. "I was younger and I learned from my mistakes ... I grew as a person."

She also said she feels like a victim of the media and claimed that she never wanted fame.

"They kind of created this idea of me and I’m just being left to deal with it," Sorokin said. "I’m trying to not glamorize my crimes."

"I suffered a lot as a result and as the consequences for my actions," she added.

It remains to be seen whether Sorokin will be allowed to remain in the US.

She says she hopes in the future she will be know for her "legit projects," like her artwork and an upcoming podcast.

She told Tapper she's only watched about 30 minutes of Inventing Anna and that she doesn't think the show nailed her infamous accent.
