College basketball: The Fighting Irish hang on at home to upset the Wildcats

South Bend, Indiana - The Notre Dame Fighting Irish put their undefeated Atlantic Coast home record on the line against one of the biggest college basketball powerhouses, the Kentucky Wildcats, and came out on top.

The Irish outlasted the tenth-ranked Wildcats 66-62, snapping Kentucky’s seven-game winning streak, while Notre Dame stopped a three-game skid of their own.

The first half featured a really close game between the teams with several lead changes and neither side holding more than a four-point lead.

Kentucky went into halftime 30-28 up and the action remained tight through the second half as single-digit leads changed hands again and again.

With the game tied at 62-62 in the last minute and a half, Notre Dame jumped ahead by two with just 13 seconds remaining.

In their last possession, the Wildcats missed a layup, followed by the Irish getting two more points to close out the game.

As his team’s leading scorer, junior guard Dane Goodwin (21) was the most valuable player on the court Saturday night.

He may not have scored that much, but Goodwin put up five points in the dramatic final four minutes of the game to help keep his team in a position to win. Considering how fine the margins were, that ended being a crucial contribution to memorable win.

Goodwin finished the game shooting 5-for-9 from the field for 14 points, six rebounds, and one assist.

The Wildcats have suffered their first loss on the road, even worse, to an unranked opponent.

One big reason for falling short on Saturday night was how poorly they shot the ball from long-range.

Against Notre Dame, Kentucky only made two three-pointers out of 19 attempts. Those are the kind of numbers that make the difference between victory and defeat.

There's plenty of food for thought if the Wildcats don’t want to get shocked by another unranked team any time soon.

On Saturday, the Fighting Irish will play host to the Indiana Hoosiers while the Wildcats will also be at home to play the Ohio State Buckeyes.
