NBA: Mavs superstar Luka Doncic cashes in on groundbreaking mega money deal

Dallas, Texas - The Dallas Mavericks agree to terms with their superstar forward with a deal that will pay him a never-before-seen amount of money for a player at such a young age.

Luka Doncic (23) will sign a mega-deal that’s the first of its kind in the NBA, paying him $207 million over five years.

This gargantuan haul of cash is part of a supermax rookie extension for a man who has already been named to the All-NBA team twice in his short, but spectacular career. Hitting such a milestone so early was unheard of until now.

The news was broken on Monday night to ESPN by agent Bill Duffy of BDA Sports, who negotiated the deal on his client Doncic’s behalf. According to ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, Duffy and members of the Mavericks’ front office all traveled to Doncic’s homeland of Slovenia for the signing of the deal and a formal press conference, both to take place on Tuesday.

Doncic himself released a statement to ESPN as well, saying: "The game of basketball has given me so much and has taken me to so many amazing places. I am humbled and excited to remain in Dallas as part of the Mavericks... I am committed to the organization and appreciate the support of my fans."

Doncic was selected with the third pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks, but was immediately traded to the Mavs, a deal that sent scoring machine Trae Young to Georgia. Doncic won Rookie of the Year honors in 2018-19 and was voted to the All-NBA first-team the past two seasons. Unfortunately, he and his Mavs haven’t made it past the first round of the playoffs the last two seasons, but this new deal marks a commitment from the Mavericks organization to a player that has nowhere to go but up.

His most recent action on the court came at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, leading Slovenia’s national team to a fourth-place finish after falling short in the bronze medal game to Australia.
