A total of 10 people were injured, including three who were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, after a bridge collapsed in Pittsburgh on Friday, according to the city's Mayor Ed Gainey.

A public transportation bus was reportedly traveling over the bridge at the time of its collapse.

"The good thing at this point is that there's no fatalities," Gainey said at a press conference.

The cause of the bridge collapse is currently unknown.

The accident came several hours prior to President Biden's visit to the city, where he is set to discuss the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that was introduced in April 2021.

According to a statement previously released by The White House, the law intends to "rebuild America’s roads, bridges and rails, expand access to clean drinking water, ensure every American has access to high-speed internet, tackle the climate crisis, advance environmental justice, and invest in communities that have too often been left behind."

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald referred to the bridge as a "major artery" for the city of Pittsburgh and travelers across the state of Pennsylvania.

In addition to the bridge collapse, there was also a gas leak in the area, forcing city officials to temporarily cut the gas lines off.

When asked by reporters about the significance of the accident happening the same day Biden was set to visit regarding improvements that need to be done to roadways, Mayor Gainey said, "This Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is critical to southwest Pennsylvania and the city of Pittsburgh. We have bridges we need to take care of."

Following the collapse, Press Secretary Jen Psaki tweeted, "Our team is in touch with state and local officials on the ground as they continue to gather information about the cause."

"The President will proceed with [the] trip planned for today and will stay in touch with officials on the ground about additional assistance we can provide," she added.

President Biden is expected to speak about the Infrastructure Bill and its newfound importance to the city at the Mill 19 Business Center in Pittsburgh on Friday afternoon.
