She was a real ocean athlete, winning the world surfing championship for dogs five times.

The animal was even the first dog to make it into the "Surfers Hall of Fame" on the Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach, where her paw prints are immortalized.

Sugar has now died at the age of 16, as announced on the little white dog's official Instagram page.

Dogs Dog was terrified by the shelter – and her reaction to finding a loving home has everyone crying!

The sporty lady dog died peacefully "in her daddy's arms," the Insta statement reads.

"She lived to put smiles on faces," the dog dad continued.

"thank you for loving Sugar, Good bye my Sugar... i can't believe [I'm] writing this .. i'm going to miss you so much."

To accompany the emotional farewell words to his beloved furry friend, Sugar's owner shared several photos of her "last wave," showing the animal with a life jacket on a surfboard at the beginning of March.

Thousands of people expressed their sympathy in the comments and remembered Sugar's unique surfing adventures.

Sugar, who was also used as a therapy dog, had been on the board for years – either alone or alongside her owner Ryan Rustan.

A few weeks ago, the pet owner made his four-legged friend's cancer diagnosis public and launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the dog's treatment.

The proceeds are now to be used for the dog's cremation and a burial at sea.
