Washington DC - Just one in four Americans approves of Donald Trump's war on Iran, according to new survey data.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll – conducted with 1,282 adults between February 28 and March 1 – found that around 27% of respondents support the Trump administration's "Operation Epic Fury," carried out together with Israel.
Around 43% of Americans surveyed disapproved of the airstrikes, while 29% were unsure.
Among people who identified as Democrats, 74% opposed the strikes, while just 7% were in favor.
Within Trump's Republican base, 13% were against the strikes, and 32% were unsure. Around 42% said they would be less likely to support the Iran operation if it led to "US troops in the Middle East being killed or injured," while 34% said they would be less likely to support if it led to increased fuel prices domestically.
The US and Israel launched massive bombardments against Iran and killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday, with the death toll so far topping 550 people. Three US military members have been killed and five gravely wounded as Trump warned that more American casualties are "likely" to come.
Earlier this year, the US launched a bombing attack on Caracas and abducted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. The US under Trump has also conducted strikes in Syria, as well as in Nigeria on Christmas Day.
More than half of respondents said Trump uses military force "too much," including 23% of Republicans, 87% of Democrats, and 60% of people who did not report a party affiliation.
The president has suggested the military attacks on Iran could last another "four weeks."
