Los Angeles, California – Nicole Richie's 40th birthday took an unexpected turn when the star caught on fire.

All eyes were on Richie after she posted a jarring video from her 40th birthday on Instagram.

The video shows The Simple Life star blowing out candles on her birthday cake when the unthinkable happened.

As Richie leaned over her cake to blow out the candles, some of her loose locks seem to have fallen victim to the flame, setting a small section of her hair on fire.

At first, Richie hardly noticed, laughing joyously until someone next to her reached across in an attempt to put the fire out.

For someone who's quite literally on fire, Richie's reaction was relatively calm as she continued to chuckle at the madness of it all.

The video itself was captioned, "Well...so far 40 is" followed by a fire emoji.

Never one to take things seriously, Richie's husband, Joel Madden, left a hilarious comment on the post that longtime fans of the star undoubtedly appreciated.

"That's hot," Madden wrote, in reference to her and Paris Hilton's iconic catchphrase from the 2007 hit series The Simple Life that was all too fitting for Richie's fiery fiasco.

Though the video cuts off before the flame was extinguished, Richie can be seen fighting the fire with laughter, style, and grace.
