College coach arrested for stealing nudes from student athletes

Boston, Massachusetts - An ex track and field coach at Boston’s Northeastern University was arrested Wednesday after he used fake social media accounts in a scheme to trick female student-athletes into sending him nude and semi-nude photos.

Steve Waithe (28) of Chicago allegedly created bogus social media accounts to try to dupe female students whose photos he stole into sending him more.

Waithe is also accused of cyberstalking at least one female student-athlete, the Department of Justice said in a statement, as reported by AP News.

According to the criminal complaint, Waithe would regularly ask for the athletes’ phones at practice so he could film their form.

But he was sometimes caught red-handed by the victims when he was instead scrolling through their photos instead of recording.

Waithe, who is charged with wire fraud and cyberstalking, worked as a coach at Northeastern from October 2018 to February 2019, and was apparently fired after the university investigated "his inappropriate conduct toward female student athletes."

A year after his suspension, Waithe allegedly used pseudonyms, such as Katie Janovich, Kathryn Svoboda, and Privacy Protector, to reach out to at least five members of the track team.

In one such case, Waithe allegedly contacted a victim through Instagram and claimed he could help people whose nude photos were stolen get the images taken down – but added that he needed additional photos to conduct reverse image searches.

He sent the victim nude photos of herself, which she told authorities had been saved to the camera roll. She said she had given Waithe her phone several times to film her during practice.

In October 2020, prosecutors said Waithe hacked into the Snapchat account of a sixth student athlete and stole nude photos she’d sent to her boyfriend.

He targeted additional victims with a separate scheme to get women to send photos to him via email, pretending to help them with "body development."

According to the criminal complaint, investigators have found at least ten victims have been affected by the body development scam. All in all, Waithe had over 300 nude and explicit images saved to his Google account.
