Caution, falling fruit! Balcony collapses after urban gardening project goes wrong

Kiev, Ukraine - One Kiev local's extreme love of strawberries could have killed a neighbor, as the weight of an urban garden sheered off an entire balcony, causing nearly one ton of soil and berries to go plummeting to the street below!

The balcony on the sixth floor of an apartment block could not withstand the "garden construction" of a resident and rushed down under the weight of earth and strawberries.

The accident happened on June 11 in Ukraine. A resident of a block of apartments had filled their balcony with almost a full ton of potting soil in order to grow some coveted strawberries.

It seems the weight, in combination with some unapproved balcony extensions, caused undue strain on the structure, which in any case wasn't designed to be a sixth floor berry farm.

Once the harvest ripened, the building couldn't withstand the weight of the soil and the fruit and finally gave way, causing the entire structure to come falling out of the sky, strawberries and all, according to Kiev city officials.

The report added: "The owner of the apartment planted an entire garden on the balcony."

Fortunately, local authorities were able to confirm that no one was injured. Officials from the Kiev rescue service later dismantled the remains of the extension.

Kiev authorities often have to deal with residents installing unsafe extensions on their balconies or carrying out dangerous repairs in their apartments themselves.
