Hilary Duff gets real about "horrifying" eating disorder in her teenage years

Los Angeles, California - Hilary Duff dropped a shocking revelation about her difficult years as a child star, where she admitted that her mental and physical health suffered due to her success.

While speaking to the Australian edition of Women's Health, the Disney alum dished on her former desire to keep up with Hollywood's standards of the "perfect body," which led to her developing an eating disorder as a 17-year-old.

"Because of my career path, I couldn't help but think, 'I'm in front of the camera, and actresses are skinny,' It was horrifying," the 35-year-old told the outlet.

The How I Met Your Father star explained that she has since developed a healthy relationship with her body.

"I appreciate my health and do activities that make me feel strong instead of just improving the appearance of my body. I spend time with people who make me feel good and who have similar views on health and body image, and I get enough sleep and eat a balanced diet."

Duff isn't the only former child star to talk about the heavy toll having stardom at a young age plays on the ones' health, as Demi Lovato has also spoken openly about her battle with addiction.

Hilary Duff puts her family first

In her tribute to her ex-boyfriend Aaron Carter, the Lizzie McGuire star also addressed the late singer's public struggles before his shocking passing.

But, the Lizzie McGuire star's trainer Dominic Leader, who also spoke to the magazine, dished that as much as her health is a priority, Duff's "family and work" trumps everything.

"When she comes home from work, she wants to spend time with her family because she spends very little time with them when she's hard at work, so every moment counts," her trainer told the outlet.

Hilary is mom to son Luca, who he shares with her ex-husband, and daughters Banks and Violet whom she shares with her husband Matthew Koma.
