Reeves was set to star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the Martin Scorsese-helmed production, but according to Variety, sources say the actor has bowed out.

It's not clear why the 58-year-old bailed on the project just two months after Hulu announced he had been brought on board.

The project has been in development limbo since DiCaprio acquired the rights to the story, with intentions of developing it into a film, back in 2010.

By 2015, Martin Scorsese had signed on as director, and the idea was eventually picked up by Hulu for a series in 2019.

Devil in the White City is based on a novel of the same name by Erik Larson, and Reeves would have starred as the story's lead, Chicago architect Daniel H. Burnham.

This would have been the John Wick actor's first ever major role in a series, as he has mainly done movies throughout his career.

Keanu Reeves has other high-profile projects in the works, including a sequel to his 2005 movie Constantine, and he will be reprising his role as Johnny Silverhands in the upcoming DLC for the Cyberpunk 2077 video game.
