19-year-old Robert Crimo III is accused of opening fire on a Fourth of July parade earlier this year in Highland Park, Illinois, killing seven people and injuring many others.

His father Robert Crimo Jr., who helped his son obtain a license back in December 2019, has been charged with seven felony counts of reckless conduct after he turned himself in to police on Friday, according to reports.

While authorities have said that there was no reason to deny the son's gun license application, as he had no criminal history or known mental health conditions, unearthed public records tell a different story.

In April 2019, records show that Crimo III attempted to suicide by machete, and the police report noted a "history of attempts." And in September 2019, a police report shows that Crimo III threatened to "kill everyone" with a collection of knives he owned.

"Parents and guardians are in the best position to decide whether their teenagers should have a weapon," explained Lake County state attorney Eric Rinehart. "In this case, the system failed when Robert Crimo Jr. sponsored his son. He knew what he knew, and he signed the form anyway."

A bond hearing for the charges brought against Robert Crimo Jr. is scheduled for Saturday.
