Zohran Mamdani allows NYC agencies to return to TikTok after ban: "We're back"
New York, New York - Zohran Mamdani has revived the New York mayor's account on TikTok and said other city agencies may start posting on the platform.
"TikTok, we're back," Mamdani says in a video posted to the @nycmayor account on Tuesday.
Back in 2023, Mamdani's predecessor, Eric Adams, had barred use of TikTok on city-issued phones over concerns that its parent company, ByteDance, could share information with China.
Earlier this year, TikTok officially announced it was establishing a majority American-owned joint venture to operate its US business in order to avert a threatened ban.
According to Wired, NYC Cyber Command is instituting new rules requiring city agencies to use separate, government-issued devices for TikTok that "cannot contain sensitive or restricted data, and they cannot be used for email, internal systems, or privileged access." Agencies will also have to designate specific press and media staff members to operate the accounts with government email addresses.
"When it comes to TikTok usage, there's going to be specific procedures, and also it will be authorized users who will be able to use this on city devices," Mamdani said during a press conference on Tuesday.
"Now, just to remind everyone, the concerns around privacy had to do, as was stated, with the prior ownership of TikTok. That ownership has now changed. We see the federal government is using TikTok," he continued.
"Our goal is to communicate with as many New Yorkers as possible. This is one way that many New Yorkers are engaging with the world around them."
