College basketball fans call for major coaching change-ups amid teams' losing streaks

Columbus, Ohio - Buckeye hoops fans are already calling for head coach Chris Holtmann to be fired, less than a year after he signed a contract extension with Ohio State basketball. Kentucky's longtime head coach John Calipari has also been the subject of similar fan disappointment.

After signing a contract extension with Ohio State basketball just last year, head coach Chris Holtmann has struggled to lead the Buckeyes to success on the basketball court this season.

Last season, the Buckeyes finished top five in the Big Ten conference and earned an at-large bid into the March Madness tournament.

This year, however, Ohio State has been struggling on the hardwood, and have become one of the worst teams in the conference.

On Wednesday night, the Buckeyes lost to Nebraska on the road, marking their fifth-straight upset this season. And fans are fed up, to say the least.

"When is Ohio State going to say enough is enough and fire Holtmann?" one fan wrote on Twitter. "2nd to last place in the conference. He needs to go!"

"Chris Holtmann out here taking Ohio State basketball to new depths," another fan added. "Maybe Gene Smith can give him another extension. Bravo on losing five straight including the last three to heavyweights Minnesota, Rutgers and Nebraska. #FireHoltmann."

It's unlikely the Buckeyes will fire Holtmann after his new extension, which runs through the 2027-28 season. But the Scarlet & Gray will need to make some big changes and make them fast, with the conference championship tournament and March Madness just around the corner.

Like Buckeyes fans, Kentucky fans have also called for a new basketball coach for the program.

The Wildcats, known to be a power program, have seen a slow but sure shift in their court dominance in recent years.

With their latest Sweet 16 appearance in 2019, and most recently a loss to unranked South Carolina, Kentucky fans have taken to social media with rants over replacing the team's coach of 14 years, John Calipari.

"I think it's time for Kentucky to fire John Calipari," one fan tweeted. "Last won NCAA Tournament game in 2019. Have produced no names recently known to NBA Draft. Just lost to South Carolina at home."

The loss to the Gamecocks riled up another fan, who wrote, "South Carolina, which was winless in the SEC and lost at home by 43 points to Tennessee on Saturday, just beat Kentucky in Rupp Arena. John Calipari's seat is officially on fire."

Some fans haven't limited their protests to social media.Fans who attended the Wildcats' games last week held signs that read, "Please go to Texas," in response to the Longhorns' open coaching job amid its former head coach Chris Beard's arrest scandal.

Kentucky's next game will come on Saturday against Texas A&M at home at 2 PM EST.
