The second-ranked Blue Devils beat down the Phoenix 87-56 for their third win in a row and second winning streak so far this season.

For Elon’s basketball team, this was their eighth loss in nine games.

This matchup went as well as it could if you’re a Duke fan, of course.

For the Phoenix, the best they could do was tie the Blue Devils, and that happened just once, a 2-2 score just 39 seconds into the game.

Once Duke regained the lead a minute later, they never looked back.

The Blue Devils’ success was a mixture of good defense on their part, but also not enough shot attempts and undisciplined play by Elon, who committed 23 total turnovers. Those errors had everything to do with the Phoenix finally breaking double-digits midway through the first half.

Coming out of halftime, Duke was up by 18 points and easily rode that comfortable lead through another dominant second half on their way to victory.

Duke’s freshman guard Trevor Keels (19) was the number-one guy on his team’s stat sheet Saturday night.

Going into their matchup against the Phoenix, Keels has been third on his team in scoring with 12 points per game.

But on the defensive front, he's Duke’s current leader in steals with 1.9 per game.

For the game, Keels finished with 8-for-13 shooting overall from the field for a team-high 19 points.

The Blue Devils are ranked second in the nation, behind only the Baylor Bears.

Duke might’ve been in the top spot by now, if not for an unexpected loss to the unranked Ohio State Buckeyes.

But Duke doesn’t have much to fret over so far this season since they’re already considered to be one of the top contenders for a deep run through the tournament in March – and they are certainly playing like it, regardless where they rank.

On Wednesday, the Blue Devils will host the Virginia Tech Hokies, while on Tuesday, the Phoenix will be on the road to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks.
