Curry's opening monologue wasn't all cracking jokes about NBA legend Lebron James and taking jabs at Tom Brady's un-retirement. There was also a serious note and it focused on Griner's never-ending nightmare.

WNBA stars Skylar Diggins-Smith and Nneka Ogwumike were also there to highlight the plight of their colleague.

"It's been 153 nights now that BG has been wrongfully detained thousands of miles away from home, away from her family, away from her friends, away from her team,'' Diggins-Smith said at the Dolby Theatre of Los Angeles. "All throughout that time, we've kept her in our thoughts and in our hearts, even though we know that ain't nearly enough to bring her home, y'all."

Curry, wearing Griner's Phoenix Mercury jersey, urged everyone to play a part in helping free the 31-year-old athlete.

"But as we hope for the best, we urge the entire global sports community to continue to stay energized on her behalf,'' he said. "She's one of us, the team of athletes in this room tonight and all over the world. A team that has nothing to do with politics or global conflict."

"The more we way her name, the louder our voices will be," Ogwumike added.

US Soccer star athlete and Olympic gold medalist Megan Rapinoe, who was honored with an ESPY Award for Best Play, also used her acceptance speech to bring awareness to Griner's case.

"The most striking thing is that BG isn't here. ...BG deserves to be free," Rapinoe said. "Every time we say her name, every time it's on social media, every time we say it in interviews, it puts pressure on everybody. It puts pressure on the administration. It puts pressure on Russia."

"It lets BG know also, above everything, we love her. We miss her."
