Florida concert charges 55 times more for a ticket if you're not fully vaccinated

St. Petersburg, Florida - A Covid-19 vaccine is getting more and more valuable.

A Florida venue announced that admission to its upcoming concert will cost only $18 for fully vaccinated guests, but 1,000 big bucks for unvaccinated patrons.

That's 55 times the price for those without the shot!

The VFW Post 39's event organizer stressed that the "discount" was made to promote health and safety, not about directly telling people to get vaccinated against coronavirus.

"We are NOT telling you what to do here," Leadfoot Promotions said in its concert announcement. "If someone wants to come unvaccinated, they will scare off many guests and will need to pay the difference."

The punk rock band Teenage Bottlerocket will perform in the Gulf Coast city of St. Petersburg on June 26.

All staff, touring band members, and patrons must have had their second shot of the vaccine by June 12, exactly two weeks before the show.

Guests who buy tickets at the reduced price will be required to show their physical CDC health department vaccination certificate upon entry, the concert description said. No photos are allowed.

Anti-vaxxers are not happy

Promoter Paul Williams told The Washington Post he received numerous hate messages and threats from anti-vaccination activists after the notice became public.

Twitter erupted with strong opinions, with many anti-vaxxers asking for the event to be shut down.

A spokesperson for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also said the different pricing was a case of discrimination, according to the newspaper.

The Republican recently signed a law prohibiting stores, government agencies, schools, and universities from requiring their customers, students or pupils to be vaccinated.

The law does not take effect until July, so the concert takes place just under the wire.

Band members said they thought the promoter "was kidding"

Teenage Bottlerocket has a 12-city southern tour planned at the end of June which they've been promoting with slogans "Safety First! Party second!" and "Mask Up! Be Cool!" They're even selling limited edition handmade rocket skull masks.

"It appears we have to coexist with COVID and music for the time being. We want to set a good example of how that can start to happen," said the band.

Singer and guitarist Ray Carlisle told CNN that at first the band thought the St. Petersburg venue's promoter was kidding about his sky-high ticket price for the unvaccinated.

"He's doing his best to keep the audience and the band safe, the staff of the venue safe, and we go along with this idea," he said of their support of the measure.

Carlisle confirmed that his bandmates have all been all vaccinated, and encouraged unvaccinated concertgoers to get the shot for their own health. He added that fans had the option to go to alternative venues in Florida, like Orlando, to see the band instead.

If the "discount" for vaccinated people was a PR stunt for the St. Petersburg venue, it has already paid off: The 250 cheaper tickets for the relatively small venue are sold out.

The four available $1,000 tickets have still not been claimed.
