Darling doggos and carefree canines can be a lot of work, and it's easy to become a little disgruntled by their constant need for attention.

Don't worry, though, there are some simple rules for dog walking that, if followed, will help minimize your workload and maximize your satisfaction.

In this dog guide, TAG24 will take a deep dive into when you should take your dog for a walk and how often. Should you walk regularly, and what else do you need to know?

How often to walk a dog

It's vitally important that any dog is walked at least one to two times every single day. Those walks don't necessarily need to be super long – half an hour each is fine – but it is important that dogs are allowed to stretch their legs and do their business.

What's also important is that, while on the walk, dogs are allowed some off-leash time. On top of organizing things like quality agility training and clicker training, your daring doggo should get the opportunity to sniff around and explore as long and as much as possible.

When to walk your dog

The best time to walk your dog is first thing in the morning, as this allows your pet to relieve itself after a long night and stretch its legs after sleeping. On top of that, if you are a working dog owner, this will give you a little one-on-one time before you shuffle off to the office.

Other than that, it is best to follow that walk up with another in the evening once you have returned home from work. Preferably, this walk would happen immediately after returning, between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM, before you sit down to dinner and start to relax in front of the TV.

When is it too cold to walk your dog outside?

Once a dog's internal temperature reduces to around 40°F, they risk hypothermia. If outside temperatures are less than around 45-50°F, then walks should be kept short and sweet. That means more regular walks every day, but only keeping them 30 minutes or less. Any more is a risk!

When is it too hot to walk your dog?

When a dog is walked at temperatures that are above 85°F, it quickly gets dangerous. In such cases, do the same as with cold weather and reduce walking times to 30 minutes or less. On top of that, allow your dog plenty of swims, keep it hydrated, and be very careful not to overdo it.

How long should I walk my dog?

The answer depends entirely on how many walks you go on. In the case of only one walk a day, that exercise must be longer than one hour each and every day. As you increase the regularity, you can reduce the amount of time each walk.

Here's how long we would recommend each walk:

  • One walk per day: 1-1.5 hours
  • Two walks per day: 30-40 minutes
  • Three to four walks per day: 20 minutes
  • More: 10-15 minutes

Your dog should spend at least an hour walking, being outside and active, every single day, no matter the season.

Dog walks are crucially important, and must be regular!

Walking your dog regularly, with an emphasis on getting them well-exercised and stretched, is extremely important for your pet's health. Leaving them at home all day, every day, is not an option. Even if you work and have a workplace hound, that dog needs a walk!

It's important to walk your dog once a day at minimum to keep it healthy and to improve your relationship. This is especially important if your animal suffers from separation anxiety or if you yourself are anxious.
