Beautiful even and straight teeth – who wouldn't want that? While some people are naturally blessed, others have to get some extra help from dental specialists.

Or do they?

TikTok users like acerendulicc claim to have found a much simpler and cheaper alternative: they try to smooth and adjust their teeth with a nail file.

The videos circulating on TikTok that recommend this DIY method have already been watched countless times and many have probably already tried it at home.

But there's a pretty good reason to stay away from this latest fad: it can actually cause long-term damage.

Dental hygienist Iman Sayed is on a crusade to educate people about the risks of DIY dentistry. In an interview with The Sun, she warns of the consequences:

"Our teeth are made up of layers. If you destroy your enamel by filing down your teeth you will never get it back."

And while this method may seem the cheapest option, it can actually end up costing a lot more in the long run.

"You may end up with extreme tooth sensitivity or even cause enough damage to kill the tooth. A dead tooth needs extensive and expensive treatment if you want to keep it," Sayed says.

Infection of the roots or chipping of teeth is also quite likely. And if that doesn't sound painful enough, bone loss can occur in extreme cases.

As these influencers will probably need to pay for extensive repairs at some point, you're better off getting a specialist to take care of any filing needs.
