Mark Zuckerberg has a new nickname for employees and it's hilarious

Menlo Park, California - Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants his employees to be called "Metamates," and almost everyone but him finds it absolutely hilarious.

After a virtual meeting with his employees on Tuesday, Zuckerberg released a lengthy and detailed Facebook post that outlined his vision for the future for Meta, the parent company that houses Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

"Now is the right time to update our values and our cultural operating system," Zuckerberg stated. "By working at Meta, we commit to applying these values to our work every day. I think these values capture how we must act as a company to bring our vision to life. "

He went on to list several of those values, which were given spiffy titles like "Build Awesome Things," "Live in the Future," and "Be Direct and Respect Your Colleagues."

It was the last value, called "Meta, Metamates, Me," that got the internet buzzing – and laughing hysterically.

He described it as "being good stewards of our company and mission. It's about the sense of responsibility we have for our collective success and to each other as teammates. It's about taking care of our company and each other."

While his attempt to create a strong mission statement that emphasizes unity and respect among its workers – who oftentimes work in a very divisive field – is admirable, the internet just can't get over how the nickname "Metamates" is supposed to be taken seriously.

Employees and the Twitterverse went to town

The Washington Post reported that the newly updated company values "were ridiculed by some employees internally, who described them as corporate indoctrination and out of touch."

So when Zuckerberg revealed the new idealistic nickname for workers, it was a virtual feeding frenzy, and icing on the cake.

The public ridicule on a seemingly well-meaning attempt is enough to make you feel a bit sorry for old Zuck – but then again, it's just too entertaining. It doesn't help that he not only looks like Captain Spock, but that his change in values seems like Spock has gone sentient and is attempting to create his own Borg, called "Metamates."

Meta CTO Andrew "Boz" Bosworth tweeted that the phrase "Meta, Metamates, Me" is a reference to a similar naval phrase that was also once used to with Instagram. Apparently, Zuckerberg really wants to push the phrase again – originality be damned.

Alex Heath of the Verge reported his takeaways from the employee meeting, and while it wasn't in the Facebook post, he recalled that Zuckerberg told employees they shouldn't "nice themselves to death." What a strange thing to say to your workforce.

While it's never a good thing to make fun of people online, even Zuck, we can't help but pull out our popcorn like Michael Jackson in that infamous Thriller meme and watch the Twitterverse do its due diligence.

The Facebook comments in response to Zuck's post are comical, but – of course – the award for the platform with the most ruthless feedback has to go to Twitter. Here are a few tweets that made our day and the wound – and our metaphorical popcorn – that much more salty:

Maybe it's time Zuckerberg gets his head out of the Metaverse and starts dealing with the problems – and the chatter – he and his company are facing in the real world.
