After Diamond Garrett's shooting, her TikTok dances made her a star

West Palm Beach, Florida – A quick road trip to grab petrol money with a friend ended up changing Diamond's life forever, as she was caught up in gun violence that saw her shot nine times. Now, she's a TikTok star.

In 2012, Diamond joined a friend to grab gas money across town in West Palm Beach, Florida. When they arrived, though, things took a shocking turn.

While sitting in the passenger seat of her friend's car, Diamond was shot nine times – with bullets hitting her stomach, back, legs, and arms. It inevitably left her paralyzed.

In an interview with Truly, Diamond said the shooters directed 79 rounds of ammo in her direction, using an AK-47 and an AR-15 to do the damage.

It wasn't until one month after the shooting that Diamond realized she was paralyzed, and when she did, her heart sunk.

"My initial response after being told I couldn't walk anymore was that I can't dance anymore," she recalled. "That's what stuck with me. It wasn't about me walking, it was about me dancing."

Despite the major lifestyle adjustment that came with being paralyzed from the waist down, Diamond found she was still able to dance, which re-ignited her soul.

TikTok and Insta a triumph after Diamond Garrett's shooting

In 2019, she started posting videos of herself dancing in her wheelchair. Now, she has now amassed more than 128,000 on her Instagram.

Not only does Diamond share uplifting videos on social media to motivate herself and others, but she's recently begun to choreograph routines to perform alongside other dancers.

"I really miss the connection with the audience and the performers. Being next to other performers is really, really a rush. It's not the same being in your home," she said.

No matter what life throws her way, Diamond said that as long as she can dance, nothing else matters.
