Snapchat's updated Scan feature needs a lot more work

Santa Monica, California - Snapchat's revamped Scan feature just isn't there yet, but the company promises improvement.

Scan isn't new to Snapchat, and relies on the cooperation of other companies to be able to complete tasks like solving math problems scanned with the camera, or soon, being able to find recipes based on a single ingredient.

The announced updates to Scan however are hoped to improve its functionality over time, such as shopping for similar clothes based on what the app recognizes through the camera.

"We definitely think Scan will be one of the priorities for [Snapchat’s] camera going forward," Evan Zhan, Snap’s head of camera product, told The Verge.

"Long term, we see the camera doing a lot more than what it can do today."

But so far, using Scan is not as useful as it could be, with the shopping ability only partially working and the only other tasks it can do include identifying breeds of dogs, or pulling up lenses that can be used when you look at the sky.

One end goal is to be able to do what TikTok's Spotlight feature does: switching to your own camera after watching a video done in a certain format and have those same settings apply to your video, allowing you to automatically add to the existing footage.

Why then is the company trying to hype up Scan now when it seems so unfinished? Well, the more users interact with it, the more it learns and improves itself, just like any program.

And the company will certainly benefit as the application learns from more user interaction, as it could eventually become a very lucrative advertiser portal. So watch for the day when you take a picture of a pair of jeans you like and jeans from the highest paying advertiser show up first as a match.
