Icy roads create Texas-sized delays on a major state highway

Kerrville, Texas – The winter weather that hit Texas on Thursday caused auto accidents that left drivers stranded on Interstate 10 for hours.

Early Friday morning, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) reported several accidents on I-10 on the outskirts of Kerrville, Texas, leading to a standstill on the interstate in below-freezing temperatures.

The crashes occurred when multiple semi-trucks jackknifed due to the icy road conditions, blocking lanes, and trapping travelers.

Though TxDOT tweeted on Friday morning that a previously blocked eastbound lane of I-10 was now open, the department noted it was still working on getting traffic moving amid the hours-long standstill.

According to TxDOT's chief communication officer Bob Kaufman, the situation involving still-stranded big rigs on I-10 stems from, "Challenges with some truckers because they are over hours of service. They either will not move or cannot move."

On Friday morning, Kerr County Sheriff's office posted a lengthy warning on its Facebook page, stating, "Interstate 10 has seen some very bad situations and should be avoided. An 18-wheeler is jackknifed near mile marker 504 westbound, blocking travel."

The city of Kerrville's police department stated on Facebook that east and westbound traffic on I-10 has been limited to one lane each way, as they work with truck drivers and TxDOT to get people moving safely.

The police department then urged travelers who must embark on the roadways to, "Be prepared to self sustain in the event that traffic comes to a halt again."

With temperature highs still in the 20s and low 30s, the road conditions remain bleak as officials continue to urge Texans to stay home.
