Riyadh, Saudi Arabia - Dozens of camels have been disqualified from a Saudi beauty contest for having undergone Botox injections as well as other forms of physical enhancement, Saudi state news agency SPA reported on Thursday.

Organizers of the King Abdel-Aziz Camel Festival uncovered multiple cases of "deliberate tampering" including 27 camels disqualified for having undergone body part stretching and 16 camels for receiving Botox injections, the agency said.

The festival, which is being held near the Saudi capital Riyadh and began earlier this month, offers a total of 250 million riyals (over $66 million) in cash prizes in its many different contests, Saudi media said.

In a bid to land a prize or to raise the price tag of their animals, some camel owners resort to using cosmetic techniques to enhance features, SPA added.

The organizers employ specialists and high-tech equipment to expose "all tampering," it added.

The camels are all subject to thorough physical examinations including X-rays, genetic analysis and lab tests.

Violators face stiff penalties, the agency said, without giving any details.

The festival is named after oil-rich Saudi Arabia's founder and is organized by the Saudi Camel Club, which is overseen by the monarchy's powerful Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman.
