RR Auction sold the "unprecedented archive" of 42 letters, consisting of over 150 handwritten pages, for $669,875.

According to the auction house's website, Dylan, who still went by his real name Robert Zimmerman at the time, composed the letters to his high school sweetheart Barbara Hewitt.

In autumn of 1957, the two met in history class, and eventually began dating during Hewitt's sophomore year at Hibbing High in Minnesota.

On New Year's Eve, the two fell in love while on their first date, and by January, they began writing to each other consistently until the end of 1959.

The 42 letters included were in Hewitt's possession until she passed away in 2020.

"Wide-ranging in scope and content, the young Dylan reveals his dreams of changing his name and selling a million records, offers bits and pieces of poetry, and professes his never-ending affection," the auction house said.

"He prepares for the Hibbing High talent show; invites Barbara to the Buddy Holly show in Duluth; speaks of singing, songwriting, and recording; comments on the cars and clothing of the late 1950s; and writes on the records he's listening to."

The bunch also included a Valentine's Day card and a brief, unsigned handwritten note.

Bob Dylan must have been quite the romantic, and the collection likely offers insight into whom the artist was before he went on to influence music in multiple ways.
