Pac-12 football championship game: More than just a conference decider

Las Vegas, Nevada - The Pac-12 college football championship stage is set, and the Trojans are faced with stakes much bigger than a conference title.

On Friday, the USC Trojans will face Utah for the Pac-12 conference title and a berth to the College Football Playoffs at Allegiant Stadium in Vegas.

After Utah defeated Colorado on Saturday, the Utes are officially set for a Friday night date with USC for the Pac-12 title.

While Utah will be playing to defend a conference title, USC has its eyes on an even bigger prize: advancing to the College Football Playoff (CFP).

The No. 4 CFP ranking from the selection committee would be at risk in case of a defeat.

USC's only loss this season came against the defending conference champions Utah, in a nail-biting 43-42 finish.

With an 11-1 season record, currently tying Ohio State, USC must win the conference title on Friday to stay ahead of the Buckeyes, who were handed their first lost of the season from rival Michigan and are now out of the conference championship game – and currently, the CFP.

But Ohio State is licking its lips for a second chance in the top-four CFP ranking and will be coming for USC's No. 4 spot if the Trojans trip up on Friday.

On the other hand, USC won't be lacking for motivation. Already riding high after a big home win against Notre Dame last weekend, the thirst for vengeance against the Utes' will push the Trojans to give it their all in this prime-time championship game.

The big Pac-12 clash is set for Friday, 8 PM EST, at Allegiant Stadium.
