Student killed in second North Carolina high school shooting

Winston-Salem, North Carolina - A student was killed in a shooting at a high school in North Carolina on Wednesday, marking the second school shooting in the state this week.

Police for the city of Winston-Salem confirmed in a press conference and on Twitter that the victim was William Chavis Raynard Miller Jr.

Sheriff's deputies from Forsyth County and responding emergency personnel were dispatched to Mount Tabor High School at 12:07 PM local time, according to CNN.

The school and other local high schools were placed on lockdown, and the single victim of the shooting was located.

"Medical responders began life-saving measures and the injured student was transported to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries," said Winston-Salem Police Department Chief Catrina Thompson.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today and in the difficult days to come," officials added.

The age of the victim was not initially mentioned, and the shooter was taken into custody without issue. They have been identified as a juvenile, and are believed to be a fellow student. A motive is still unclear.

Mount Tabor High School will be closed until Tuesday.

Another high school student was shot in Wilmington, North Carolina on Monday, making this the second school shooting in the state in one week.

Officials said several students were fighting at New Hanover High School when a 15-year-old shot another student. The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
