During a press conference on Friday, Utah Governor Spencer Cox revealed that 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Washington County had been apprehended after a family friend alerted law enforcement that he confessed to fatally shooting Kirk at Utah Valley University on September 10.

Cox refused to share more details about Robinson as the investigation is ongoing, but media outlets and internet sleuths have been combing through social media, finding more information on who he is.

According to The Daily Beast, Tyler is the eldest of three sons to Amber and Matt Robinson. Amber is a licensed social worker, while Matt runs a business installing kitchen countertops, cabinets, and stone surfaces.

Public records reveal that while both of his parents are registered Republicans, Tyler has previously registered as a nonpartisan voter. In a photo taken in 2017, Tyler is seen wearing what appears to be a costume of President Donald Trump for Halloween.

Images on social media also reveal the Robinsons are a tight-knit Mormon family with relatives in the military, and appear to have an affinity for guns. Matt is a registered hunter and former Sheriff.

USA Today reports that Tyler graduated from Pine View High School in 2020 and was offered an academic scholarship from Utah State University, which confirmed he attended for at least one semester in 2021.

What motivated the shooting?

The public fascination surrounding Robinson's motives and political affiliations comes as the killing sparks a firestorm in US politics, with Republicans and Democrats pointing fingers at each other, blaming one another's rhetoric for recent rises in political violence.

As authorities conducted a 33-hour manhunt for the shooter with few leads, Trump publicly said the rhetoric of the "radical left" was "responsible" for Kirk's death.

Many of his MAGA allies followed suit, declaring "war" on Democrats.

Despite what we know so far, none of the details prove definitively what Robinson's political views are or his motives, and there are aspects that appear to contradict the narrative that he is conservative or a MAGA supporter.

During Friday's press conference, Governor Cox said that a family member had told authorities Robinson had become more "political" in recent years, and days before the shooting, was discussing why he "didn't like [Kirk] and the viewpoints that he had."

Cox also shared details about engravings that were etched into bullet casings, which included "Notices bulges OWO, what's this?" "Hey Fascists! Catch! [Up arrow, right arrow, and three down arrows]," "Oh, Bella Ciao", and "If you read this you are gay LMAO."

Trump has promised that more details will come out in the future, but said he and Cox believe Robinson deserves the death penalty for his alleged crime.
