Big Little Lies Director Jean-Marc Vallée found dead

Québec, Canada – Emmy-winning director and producer Jean-Marc Vallée has unexpectedly passed away.

Over the weekend, Vallée was found dead at his cabin in Quebec City, Canada at the age of 58.

Vallée's representative, Bumble Ward, confirmed the news on Sunday to the New York Post, and did not provide a cause of death.

On Monday, the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, acknowledged the tragic news and offered up his condolences on Twitter.

"Jean-Marc Vallée’s passion for filmmaking and storytelling was unmatched - so too was his talent. Through his work and with his art, he left a mark in Quebec, across Canada, and around the world. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and fans as they mourn his sudden passing," Trudeau wrote.

Known for his naturalistic and organic approach to filmmaking, Vallée rose to fame soon after his highly acclaimed 2013 film, Dallas Buyers Club, which featured Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, and garnered six Oscar nominations.

In 2014, Vallée directed the Oscar-nominated biographical adventure drama, Wild, starring Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern.

In 2017, the Montréal, Canada native went on to receive two Emmy Awards for his work producing and directing the HBO limited series, Big Little Lies, which also featured Witherspoon and Dern.

Vallée directed the first season of the series, and produced the second.

According to People, Vallée's producing partner, Nathan Ross, released a statement that read, "Jean-Marc stood for creativity, authenticity and trying things differently. He was a true artist and a generous, loving guy. Everyone who worked with him couldn't help but see the talent and vision he possessed."

He continued, "[Vallée] was a friend, creative partner and an older brother to me. The maestro will sorely be missed but it comforts knowing his beautiful style and impactful work he shared with the world will live on."

The renowned figure in film is survived by his two sons, Alex and Émile, and three siblings, Marie-Josée Vallée, Stéphanie Tousignant and Gérald Vallée.
