During a segment on the Halloween episode of The Late Late Show, Corden was joking about Elon Musk's recent Twitter takeover, and the negative attention Musk's tweets get.

"If someone puts up a poster in a town square that says 'guitar lessons available', like you don't get people in the town going, 'I don't want to play guitar! I want to play the piano you piece of s***!'" the host joked.

"Well that sign wasn't for you," he added. "It was for somebody else! You don't have to get mad about all of it."

But the bit was taken almost word for word from Ricky Gervais' 2018 Netflix comedy special Humanity. Things got worse for Corden when the British comedian sarcastically tweeted: "The bit about the town square advert for guitar lessons is brilliant."

When a fan asked if Corden asked him for permission to use the joke, Gervais said no, adding, "I reckon one of the writers 'came up with it' for him. I doubt he would knowingly just copy such a famous stand-up routine word for word like that."

Gervais then deleted his original tweet because he "felt sorry for Corden."

The Cats star later issued an apology on Twitter, explaining that he "inadvertently" told a joke "obviously not knowing it came from him."

Between this and his recent public beef with a well-know New York City restaurant, Corden has had a rough few weeks.
