Facebook wants to outsource big decisions about how it handles elections

Menlo Park, California - Facebook has reached out to experts to help the social media platform make decisions related to issues that stem from elections.

If all goes according to plan, Facebook will have a third-party group make decisions for the platform in relation to how it functions during election times.

Matters important to the social media giant included how to handle political ads and misinformation, particularly during tension-filled election seasons, according to The New York Times.

In order to better cope with these questions and decisions, Facebook wants to create an advisory body that would ultimately vote on the moves that are best for users and the company.

The organization would be comprised of experts in political and social media policy as well as members of academia.

Throughout the last presidential election, Facebook had to deal with an enormous amount of misinformation and volatility, ultimately even banning then-President Donald Trump from the platform indefinitely.

Another reason to try and outsource the decision-making process is to avoid accusations of partisanship, particularly by conservatives who claim their views are often banned and suppressed. Democrats also have shared disappointment with how misinformation has been dealt with.

Facebook insiders explained that Mark Zuckerberg wants to eliminate the appearance that he is the one making all the decisions.

The discussions about forming the advisory group are still in the earliest stages and may not come to fruition, but if they do, the panel should be in place in time for the midterm elections in 2022.
