AutoAttack Games released Legion TD 2 on October 1, giving the second most popular Warcraft 3 mod of all time a sequel.

Brent "Lisk" Batas and three friends run the San Francisco indie game studio that released the sequel to Lisk's Legion TD mod.

Lisk's Warcraft 3 mod was so popular that it was adapted for StarCraft and Dota 2, and is still played to this day.

The newly released Legion TD 2, available via Steam, is a mix of Tower Defense, Autochess, and MOBA. You can play on your own, with friends, or even competitively with teams of 2 or 4, and online queues of one to eight players.

The basic premise of the game is a focus on building and upgrading units, and then relaxing: manage your economy, place your units, and then watch the fight. The gameplay loop is straightforward enough that you can pick up and play the game. Just like poker, it is fun to learn, and rewarding to master.

The real draw of the game is the strategic depth, which AutoAttack Games says can offer "12 million possible combinations" for building a virtual army.

The developer's Kickstarter campaign page specifies that the game will be accessible to modding through Apex Editor and Unity 3D, keeping in touch with the original mods roots.

The game's creator is committed to updating the game now that it is fully released. In a Reddit AMA, Lisk said that "We still plan to add more content, fix bugs, balance, and improve all aspects of the game just as we've done throughout Early Access. We're in this for the long haul."

TAG24 gave Legion TD 2 a spin, and learning how to play is a forgiving and clear experience.

Many tower defense and auto-chess games have tutorials that teach you the basics of buying and placing units, but stop holding your hand after that.

In contrast, Legion TD 2 takes the time to give you a mini-tutorial for different core game mechanics.

The tutorial is optional, which is an excellent touch for any player who decides they want to wing it. It's worth a look, though, as it gives you an explanation of the most important gameplay mechanics.

There are also extra resources for learning more. They include buttons in the main menu for Twitch streams, invitations to join the game's dedicated Discord channel, and recommendations on how to keep playing the game after finishing the first three mini-tutorials.

If you are new to the genre, or never got the hang of other tower defense or autochess games, the intro gives a solid breakdown of Legion TD 2's systems.

Even for veterans of the genre, playing through the tutorial or the campaign is a fun, low-stakes way to mess around with combos before jumping into the ranked ladder.

Following the weekend launch event, Legion TD 2 is on sale on Steam until October 8.
