Kevin McCarthy fails in three more votes for House speakership in spite of Trump's support

Washington DC - Despite securing former president Donald Trump's outspoken support, Kevin McCarthy once again failed to win the US House speakership as the voting drama continued on Wednesday.

If California Rep. Kevin McCarthy was hoping a new day would inspire a change in some of his more obstinate colleagues, he was wrong, as Republican infighting continued on the second day of voting to name a new House Speaker.

The House Republican leader failed three times the previous day in his bid to replace fellow Californian Nancy Pelosi, who chose not to seek another term as leader of the House Democrats. Instead, she is passing the baton to Democratic colleague Hakeem Jeffries of New York.

Ahead of day 2 of voting, Trump once again announced his support of McCarthy, posting on Truth Social: "[I]t's now time for all of our GREAT Republican House Members to VOTE FOR KEVIN, CLOSE THE DEAL, TAKE THE VICTORY."

"REPUBLICANS, DO NOT TURN A GREAT TRIUMPH INTO A GIANT & EMBARRASSING DEFEAT. IT'S TIME TO CELEBRATE, YOU DESERVE IT. Kevin McCarthy will do a good job, and maybe even a GREAT JOB – JUST WATCH!" he added.

But the ex-president's endorsement apparently wasn't enough to sway opponents. McCarthy ended up with 201 votes, shy of the 218 he needs to win.

On Tuesday, the anti-McCarthy faction of the GOP cast their votes for Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, who actually supports the Republican leader. On Wednesday, they switched things up and threw their votes behind Florida Rep. Byron Donalds.

Meanwhile, Democrats once again remained united, delivering all 212 of their votes to Jeffries.

The voting is set to go to a fifth round. It's the first time in over a century that the House didn't select a speaker on the first ballot.

A sixth round of voting is expected to take place on Wednesday.

A sixth round of voting did not go any better for Kevin McCarthy as opponents within his own party continue to back Florida Rep. Byron Donalds.

Meanwhile, Democrats have stayed united around their leader, New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries.

No other congressional business can proceed until a House Speaker is selected.
