TAG24's Take: Alt-J drifts on a swirling journey into The Dream

Leeds, UK - UK group Alt-J has released music to twirl to as the world falls apart, with a tasty level of production quality that sends listeners on a dreamy drift.

The Dream is Alt-J's crisp new album, and it stacks up 12 dreamy songs to put on as you walk through the gloaming.

The indie rock group's members Joe Newman (guitar/lead vocals), Thom Sonny Green (drums), and Gus Unger-Hamilton (keyboards/vocals) have pulled off yet another album with some of the tightest production value in the industry.

"We’ve been sitting on this album for a long time, dying for you all to hear it. And release day is finally here," the group wrote on their Instagram on Friday. "It’s a huge privilege for us to still be doing this job, four albums and ten years later."

Their new drop is thought-provoking, with lyrical goodies gleaming like diamonds and the sound quality you'd expect from industry veterans. But not all of it is a reverie you remember.

Here's TAG24's swirling journey into The Dream.

Each track of The Dream intricate, and worth listening to on a good sound system or solid pair of headphones, because there are layers under the layers.

Hard Drive Gold sticks out the most, even more so when listened to after reading Alt-J's Insta post in which the group revealed the song is related to the crypto hype-train.

"Hard Drive Gold is a slightly tongue-in-cheek song written at what we thought was the height of the cryptocurrency gold rush. It's the story of the ultimate childhood fantasy, the schoolboy who becomes a millionaire overnight, and the different interactions he has with people in his life from teachers to neighbours. How ironically you interpret its message is entirely up to you."

Yet elsewhere, the album becomes mediocre, and at points, the songs become entirely forgettable. Many blend together, and make the listening experience feel more like the music is supposed to be in the background.

So even though each song sounds like the trio polished it meticulously in the studio, most tracks slid right out of my mind as soon as they were over. As most dreams do.

Jamie's hot take: The best tracks are already out

"Happiness is between two buns / Feeling funky on a rolling boil." The Dream has lyrics that hit on the beauty of the mundane and channel today's pandemic zeitgeist.

But this album’s best tracks were pre-released – U&Me, Hard Drive Gold, Get Better, and Actor – and it’s an album you’ve got to listen to more than once if you want to find the brilliant bits.

Take Get Better, which is a great example of the group's powerful lyrics.

The song is dedicated to dealing with loss in lockdown, and you can hear the pain in Joe’s voice: "I still pretend you're only out of sight in another room / Smiling at your phone."

There is also a real funky electric groove in Hard Drive Gold, and it's an album highlight.

Even if it takes some time to get to the good stuff, what I love about Alt-J is their distortions and beats, all mixed with Newman's singular voice.

At the end of the day, you can enjoy the gems in The Dream, but you'll need a lot of patience and volume to find them.

Alt-J’s lyrics in the first track sum up my feelings about the album best: "Dumbfounded by the sizzle of the bubbles on the tongue."

This isn’t an album that pulls you in off your seat and onto the dance floor, at least not a crowded one. But if you want to float dreamily off into the sunset, Alt-J's The Dream is the album for you.
