Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa's return "will be a game time decision"

College Park, Maryland - The Maryland Terps may have dodged a bullet as quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa's injury has been updated as a "game time" decision for Saturday's upcoming conference matchup against Northwestern.

Initially injured during the Terps' Week 4 game against Michigan, the college QB re-aggravated his sprained MCL while playing Indiana over the weekend when Hoosier James Head Jr. fell into his leg after a pass.

The junior from Hawaii was carted off the field in visible pain.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Maryland's head coach Mike Locksley revealed that after receiving a second opinion from team doctors, the decision to have him play in Week 8 will depend solely on his physical capabilities on Saturday.

The third-year starter has been one of college football's most productive quarterbacks this season, and is widely considered one of the greatest in Maryland football history.

The younger brother of Miami Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa – who has also been plagued and sidelined by injury over the last few weeks – Taulia holds the record for the most single-season passing yards (3,860 yards), touchdowns (26), and completions (328) - all records he achieved last year.

While many have speculated his injury to be season-ending, coach Locksley has confirmed the star athlete will play again before the year is over - just later in the season than rather sooner.

If Taulia Tagovailoa is out, can backup quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. rise to the occasion?

If Tagovailoa doesn't see action on Saturday, redshirt freshman Billy Edwards Jr. will step in as the Terps' starter.

Following Tagovailoa's injury against the Hoosiers, Edwards finished out the game, completing 9 of 13 passes for 97 yards and two touchdown scores in the 38-33 win over Indiana.

The transfer student from Wake Forest's highlight of the night came when he capped off a 62-yard drive with a 3-yard game-winning touchdown he rushed himself.

While Edwards has been seen playing time in a few other games this season for the Terps, he has yet to start a game in his career after leaving the Demon Deacons last season.

Without the passing experience of Tagovailoa, the Terps will have to rely on their running game, led by Roman Hemby. The freshman rushed for 107 yards over the weekend - his third 100-yard performance in his only seven career starts.

The running back currently ranks seventh in the Big Ten with 6.2 yards per carry and has been one of Maryland's top offensive players as just a newcomer.

On Saturday, the Terps will stay at home and host Northwestern with a kickoff set for 3:30 PM EST.
