When a street dog was hit by a car and left for dead in the Brazilian municipality of Iguatu, there was little hope for him as he had no owners to look for him and with his injuries, it was hard to tell if he was even still alive.

However, thanks to his best friend, who laid next to him in protection and solidarity, locals realized that the dog on the ground was still alive and needed help. They reached out to nurse and animal rights activist Marina Assuncao for help.

"We were unable to go to the location on Sunday afternoon because we had no available vets, but on Monday morning we received news that both of them were in the same place," Assuncao told Daily Star.

She finally arrived at the scene with a friend who is a veterinarian and found the sad dogs. When the two women approached, the injured dog's friend initially reacted aggressively.

Eventually, however, the two were able to gain the trust of the pooch's protector.

"[The uninjured dog] stayed close to the injured dog the whole time, it licked it and ran its paws over its body as if it were trying to revive it," Assuncao recounted.

Even when the injured male was hoisted into the car, his friend wanted to stay with him, immediately jumping on one of the seats, the Brazilian organization reported. "We're not sure if they might be siblings, they must be the same age, between nine months and one year old."

The pooch was taken to a clinic after the rescue, where it was given water, food and medication. According to a later post, he was making a "good recovery."
