Peter Brian Hegseth, commonly referred to as Pete Hegseth, is a former television presenter and Army National Guard officer who has served as the 29th US Secretary of Defense under President Donald Trump since 2025.

Having studied politics at Princeton University, Hegseth became an infantry officer and served at Guantánamo Bay Naval Base before being deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan. A staunch conservative, he became a contributor for Fox News in 2014 and supported Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.

After serving as an advisor to Trump during his first administration, Hegseth became Defense Secretary in early 2025 after Trump's 2024 election victory. His Senate Confirmation hearing saw him face allegations of sexual misconduct, financial mismanagement, and alcohol abuse.

In office, Hegseth has been embroiled in a number of scandals, most noticeably over the alleged use of the Signal messaging platform to share sensitive information between senior government officials. Controversially, he has used polygraph testing to root out leakers in the department and was involved in the deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles and Washington, DC.
