Joseph "Joe" Robinette Biden Jr. became the 46th US president when he beat President Donald Trump in the 2020 election and assumed office in 2021. He went on to lead a divisive term in office, characterized in part by his position as the then-oldest man ever to be elected president.
Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1942, Biden has been a member of the Democratic Party since 1969 and served as a senator for the state of Delaware for 36 years. He also held the office of Vice President under President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017.
In 2024, Biden's bid for re-election crashed after a disastrous television debate against Trump. After pulling out of the race, he was replaced by his Vice President Kamala Harris, who ultimately lost the campaign, leading to Trump's return to the White House in January 2025.
