Zohran Kwame Mamdani is a New York State Assembly member, representing the 36th district in Queens since 2021. He is the current Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City.
Mamdani electrified the nation when he won New York City’s ranked-choice Democratic mayoral primary in June 2025, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo. He is now campaigning for the general election on November 4, 2025.
The self-described democratic socialist is running on a platform calling for rent freezes, free buses, no-cost childcare, and city-owned grocery stores, as well as recognition of Palestinian human rights and increased protections for immigrants amid the Trump administration's mass detentions and deportations.
