Zohran Kwame Mamdani is the Democratic mayor-elect of New York City. He was first elected to the New York State Assembly in 2020 to represent the 36th district in Queens.

Mamdani electrified the nation when he won New York City’s ranked-choice Democratic mayoral primary in June 2025, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo. He repeated that success in the general election on November 4, 2025 – a contest that made headlines around the world.

The self-described democratic socialist ran on a platform calling for rent freezes, free buses, no-cost childcare, and city-owned grocery stores, as well as recognition of Palestinian human rights and increased protections for immigrants amid the Trump administration's mass detentions and deportations.

Mamdani’s popular progressive agenda has stoked the ire of wealthy and powerful interests and individuals. He is due to take office as New York City’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor on January 1, 2026. Follow his journey at TAG24 NEWS!
